The duets of this present edition are taken from a collection of madrigals by Luzzaschi, printed in 1601, Madrigali.... per cantare e sonare a uno, e doi, e tre soprani, Roma, 1601. It is clear from the composer's dedication of the volume to the Cardinal Aldobrandini, that he intended it as a posthumous homage to therare and singular" music of the court before Alfonso's death (in 1597)
